Political Awareness Game
Since the Egyptian revolution that started on the 25th of January, people have started to be more aware about the political field. Very soon they became politically involved, and had the urge to learn more about their rights. However, the interest didn’t hold on for too long. The excitment gradually started to fade away and typical behaviors, attitudes and lifestyle slowly went back to how it used to be before. People started realizing that -just now- they are learning about politics.
It was very obvious that during the 19th of March referendum on the constitution, people’s votes were influeced by several factors other than knowlegde. They were biased by religious figures, family members, etc...
Upon previous observations, we as designers, chose to tackle the topic “Education” as it is the source of knowledge.
A revolution doesn’t happen everyday to make people learn about politics, therefore it is neccesary for children to at least have background information during their growing up phase, in order to be aware about their rights, and to have a voice in the future.
It is a challenge to introduce children to such a dry topic. The question was how could we attract such a young age group to political terms and definitions.
Having been part of the Egyptian education system in the past, we remembered how boring and uninteresting the learning method was. It depended on memorizing not understanding. It was theoretical-based, not practical-based.
The aim of school children was to memorize as much model answers as they possibly could in order to acheive a high score in their exams. These information immediately vanished after the exams.
What they needed was a fun method to breakthrough that usual way of digging instead of really learning, and experiencing information.
Bringing education a step closer towards fun could be achieved through games. They are fun for children and an easy way to grab their attention towards a harsh topic.
